Yasir Pirzada concludes transformative tenure as DG PSB

Muhammad Yasir Pirzada has concluded his 22-month tenure as Director General of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), leaving behind a legacy widely regarded as one of the most transformative periods in Pakistan’s sports administration in recent decades.

During his tenure, the PSB introduced sweeping reforms in governance, anti-doping compliance, financial management, infrastructure development and athlete welfare, fundamentally reshaping the country’s sports system. One of the most significant initiatives was the launch of the National Talent Identification and Verification System (NTIVS), Pakistan’s first transparent and nationwide digital talent discovery programme. Open to athletes aged 12 to 25 in more than 30 sports disciplines, the system allows aspiring players from across the country to apply online and undergo merit-based evaluations conducted by experts, Olympians and sports scientists. Another major achievement came when Pakistan’s Anti-Doping Organisation was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s watch list in March 2025, restoring the country’s credibility in international sports. During the same period, the Pakistan Anti-Doping Board was established as the country’s official anti-doping authority, while over 140 dope tests and extensive athlete education programmes were conducted.

Pirzada’s tenure also witnessed a historic overhaul of sports governance through the introduction of Pakistan’s first Code of Ethics and Governance in Sports, new sports election regulations and tenure rules for federation officials. Independent election mechanisms were implemented across several national federations, while a formal sports dispute resolution body was established to address administrative and legal conflicts.

Financial and administrative reforms were another hallmark of the tenure. The PSB introduced paperless e-office systems, transparent online procurement and strengthened auditing mechanisms. A 90 percent increase in self-generated revenue was recorded in the 2024-25 financial year through improved management policies.

The Pakistan Sports Endowment Fund also received cabinet approval, becoming the country’s first permanent financial support system for athletes. Under Pirzada’s leadership, major infrastructure projects were completed, including synthetic hockey turfs in Muzaffarabad and Wah Cantt, upgrades at the Liaquat Gymnasium and rehabilitation work at the Roshan Khan Squash Complex. Pakistan also successfully hosted several international sporting events and expanded cooperation through agreements with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
