The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations which was held at Birmingham, England, from 28 July to 8 August 2022. The opening ceremonies of the 2022 Commonwealth Games were held at Alexander Stadium on 28 July 2022. Full of historical and cultural references to Birmingham with the Bullring and Shakespeare, a total of almost 6500 athletes from 72 countries, walked the Alexander Stadium full of 30,000 people. Prince Charles declared the games open. Following a spectacular Opening Ceremony to mark the start of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the show’s star armored Bull was the central part of the Opening Ceremony. The Bull was pulled on stage by 50 women representing the female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution who made chains used in the slave trade. The segment featured the women breaking free from their chains to symbolize release from oppression. The Ceremony’s protagonist Stella then offers friendship to the Bull highlighting our ability for compassion and togetherness. A stunning spectacle also included a Red Arrows fly-past and an appearance from a 10-metre high ‘Raging Bull’, in a section of the ceremony which focused on the plight of female chain-makers in the early 20th century. |
