31 years after its genesis, the Asian Games made a full circle back to it's birth place, New Delhi, India. Within the harmonious fifties to the blustery eighties, the Asiad had been rewarded with better understanding and further promotion of friendship through sports between Asian countries/NOCs. At 9th Asiad, the competing countries/NOCs grew three-fold and participants 9 times. There was a drastic change in the race for medals. Although the total amount of medals won were the same, China excelled Japan in gold medals. Also, it was the last Asiad to be held under the authority of the Asian Games Federation (AGF) and the Olympic Council of Asia ( OCA ) took over the responsibility.
