The XIV Asian Games were held in Busan , South Korea from 2002 . A total number of 9782 participants, coming from 44 countries, in these edition of the Asiad. There were 38 sporting events and 18.000 newsmen, officers and athletes.
It was the first time in the history of the Asian Games that all 44 member nations of the Olympic Council of Asia ( OCA ) participated. That included North Korea and Afghanistan , which returned to the Asian Games for the first time since the Taliban came to power nearly a decade ago. Body building made its debut.

There were 38 sports and 420 events.
Afghanistan returned to the games and East Timor participated for the first time.
The top three winners were: China , Korea and Japan.
