This is the third time that Korea hosted the Asian Games after Seoul in 1986 and Busan in 2002.
On September 19, on the opening ceremony of 17th Asian games at Asiad Main Stadium, the athletes were officially welcomed featuring the raise of national flags, singing the national anthem. There were also cultural performances igniting the culture and traditions of Korea.
The President of the Republic of Korea, Park Geun Hye, the President of the Olympic Council of Asia Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, the President of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Thomas Bach and the President of the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee Mr. Kin Young-Soo and other dignitaries of the Olympic fraternity also attended the Asian Games celebrations.
The show started one of the world’s biggest sporting events, themed around the concept of “One Asia” united, began with a blast of high-octane K-Pop from boy band Exo. There were performances from Grammy award-winning Korean soprano Sumi Jo and Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang.
Spectators and athletes alike joined in Psy’s signature horse-riding dance as the singer belted out an electrifying rendition of his hit at Incheon’s 61,000-seat stadium. Wearing a glittering black suit and backed by a team of glamorous dancers, the star brought the three-hour spectacle to a thumping finale, heralding the start of 15 days of competition with 9,500 athletes.
Pakistan Contingent participated in the 2014 Asian Games. Pakistan’s flag-bearer Muhammad Imran led their delegation parade during the opening ceremony at Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.
The torch was carried round the stadium by a series of Korean sports stars, including world number two woman golfer Park In-Bee and speed skater Lee Kyou-Hyuk.
South Korean President Park Geun-Hye officially opened the 17th edition of the Olympics-style event, after athletes from 45 countries had filed into the purpose-built stadium.
The thrilling, dramatic and fascinating 17th edition of Asian Games concluded here with a glittering closing ceremony at Main Incheon Stadium on a cold evening Saturday 4th October, 2014.
The three-hour colourful fiesta was a rich blend rich South Korean culture and the modern technology, mainly focusing on the rich traditions of Asia and the harmony among the Asians.
The Organizing Committee for Incheon Asian Games Chairman Kim Young-soo and Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah announced the closing of the Incheon Asiad, the official organising flag was handed to the next host city: Jakarta, Indonesia.
“For the last 16 days, we have together enjoyed the festival of Asia while exercising our full potentials in fair competitions by representing each and every nation in Asia,” Kim Young-soo said in his remarks. “During this journey, the eyes of the world have been upon us.
We have shared moments of joy, great happiness and tears of disappointment; but more than anything, we have confirmed the fact that we are one large family. Wishing for the 17th Asian Games to serve as a starting point of a new Asia, we lit the flame of the games together and now we have realized our dream,” he added.
OCA President Sheikh Ahmad said the athletes should use what they’ve learned here to their best advantage. “The Asian Games are not only about medals.”
They are about representing your country, trying your best and taking pride in your flag,” he said. “They are about sportsmanship and fair play and about friendship and team spirit. So I hope the memories and the new friends you have made will last a lifetime and that Incheon 2014 will always be remembered as the starting point of a new chapter in your life.”
