Islamabad: 12 September, 2017:  Earlier both Asian Martial Arts Games and Asian Indoor Games were organized separately.

The First Asian Martial Arts Games were organized at Bangkok (Thailand) from 1-9 August, 2009. A 36 member Pakistan Contingent participated and secured 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in these Games.

ASIAN INDOOR GAMES

The Asian Indoor Games is a multi-sport event that is contested every two years amongst the athletes representing countries from Asia. The games were regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia and its First Edition was held during 2005 at Bangkok (Thailand) in which 19-member Pakistani contingent participated.

Three Editions of the Asian Indoor Games were organized from 2005 to 2009 and Pakistan’s participation was as under:-

However, the Fourth Edition of the Asian Indoor Games was scheduled at Doha (Qatar) but the Qatar Olympic Committee officially surrendered to host the Games.   In response, the OCA decided that the 2009 Asian Indoor Games would be the last edition of the games and then the Asian Indoor Games and Asian Martial Arts Games were combined, renaming as quadrennial Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. Its inaugural event was held in Incheon, South Korea in 2013 but Pakistan Contingent could not participate.

In 2010, the Olympic Council of Asia, the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan and the administration of Ashgabat city signed an agreement to stage the 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games during September, 2017.  Accordingly the Games are being organized from 17-27 September, 2017 at Ashgabat.  In addition to Asian countries, for the first time in the history of the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, Oceania has been included in these Games, bringing the participating countries to 62. There are 21 sports included in the Games, in addition to the 19 sports originally involved in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games as per following details:-

The Honourable President of Pakistan will attend the Opening Ceremony of 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games. Mian Riaz Husain Pirzada, Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination and Mr. Jam Kamal Khan, Minister of State for Petroleum will accompany the Honourable President of Pakistan. 

 It is pertinent to add here that Pakistan Sports Board will organize a function to send of the Pakistan contingent on 13th September, 2017 at 1030 hours in Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad.  

 M/s Talha Talib and Muhammad Noha Dastagir Butt, Gold and Silver Medalist of Commonwealth Youth, Junior & Senior Weightlifting Championships held from 3-10 September, 2017 at Gold Coast City, Australia will also attend the programme.
