Cash Award Ceremony in connection with Medal Winners of
20th Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014
Islamabad: February 12, 2015: The cash award ceremony in connection with Medal Winners of 20th Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 was held in the premises of Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad on 12th February, 2015. Mian Riaz Husain Pirzada, Federal Minister for IPC was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr. Muhammad Ejaz Choudhary, Secretary, Ministry of IPC, Mr. Khalid Mahmud Mirza, Joint Secretary (Sports), Ministry of IPC and Dr. M. Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, Director General,PSB Muhammad Azam Dar, Director (NF), Shazia Ejaz, Assistant Director Women Cell and other officers of the PSB were also present on the occasion. The names of beneficiaries and cash award amount are as under:-
Mr. Shah Hussain Shah (100 Kg) Judo Silver Medal (Rs.2,000,000/-)
b) Mr. Muhammad Waseem (52 Kg) Boxing Silver Medal (Rs.2,000,000/-)
c) Mr. Qamar Abbas (74 Kg) Wrestling Silver Medal (Rs.2,000,000/-)
d) Mr. Azhar Hussain (57 Kg) Wrestling Bronze Medal (Rs.1,000,000/-)
The coaches of the medal winners were also awarded Rupees two lac each.
The Chief Guest in his address highlighted the difficulties and problems they faced for participation in the Games. It was owing to the fact that rift between two rival groups of Pakistan Olympic Association was going on and participation in the games without the legitimate POA was not possible. He further said that due to the well taken steps by Mr. Muhammad Ejaz Chudhary, Secretary, Ministry of IPC, the matter was resolved with International Olympic Committee and Pakistan contingent managed to participate in the games. Despite the fact that our preparation was not up to mark due to interruption in holding of National training camps. Even with this lapse, Pakistan contingent won three silvers and one bronze medal in Judo, Boxing and Wrestling. It is pertinent to add here that seventy one (71) countries participated in the Commonwealth Games and Pakistan secured 23rd position. The Federal Minister for IPC highly appreciated the efforts and hardworking of the players who won medals in the games. He also admired the efforts of Pakistan Sports Board for making good arrangements for the participation of teams in the games.
Dr. M. Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, DG, PSB spoke on the occasion and stated that Pakistan Sports Board is in process of expending the cash award scheme and more international events are being included in the scheme. With this arrangement, sportspersons shall avail more opportunities to excel and get benefit from the scheme. He also informed that PSB is in process of updating the sports facilities so that better environment may be provided to the sportsmen. In future ample opportunities will be provided to athletes to attend the national training camps and participate in international events at home and abroad.
20th Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow-Scotland from 23rd July to 3rd August, 2014. Sixty three (63) members Pakistan contingent comprising Badminton, Boxing, Gymnastics, Judo, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling participated in the Games. Commonwealth Games is a mega international event organized after every four years under the aegis of Commonwealth Games Federation. All the member countries of Commonwealth are affiliated with Commonwealth Games Federation through their National Olympic Committees as Commonwealth Games Association. 1st Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Canada. Pakistan first 0time participated in the 5th commonwealth games in the year 1954. Pakistan won 24 gold, 24 silver and 22 bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games so far.
