Press Release

Election of Chess Federation of Pakistan

Islamabad: September 02, 2015: The Election Commission headed by Mr. Shoaib Mir Memon, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination started the election proceedings in the light of election schedule on 2nd September, 2015 at 1100 hours at Gun & Country Club, Islamabad.  Other members of the Election Commission were Syed Habib Shah, DDG (Technical) and Mr. Muhammad Azam Dar, Director National Federations, Pakistan Sports Board. Mr. Irfan Ullah Khan, Legal Advisor, PSB was also present on the occasion. The nomination papers were submitted by the two groups. One group was led by Senator Kulsoom Parveen and the other group was headed by Mr. Hanif Qureshi. Both the stakeholders and contestants were heard by the Election Commissioner and members of the committee.

It is pertinent to add here that four Provincial Sports Boards including Gilgit Baltistan, FATA, AJK and Islamabad were requested to intimate the legitimate, lawful, genuine and duly affiliated Chess Association to Pakistan Sports Board so that they could be invited for election. Some of the Sports Departments failed to provide the requisite information to PSB. Some of the Provincial Chess Associations went to the Court of law to get the right of vote. The Courts provided relief to the petitioners to cast their vote in the above election.

Both the groups raised various objections on the Nomination papers for various positions of the office bearers of Chess Federation of Pakistan and names of representatives who will cast votes on behalf of their respective unit. The issues raised in the said meeting were required to be inquired and adjudicated to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

In view of the above, Election Commission unanimously decided to postpone the election till the resolution of issues relating to Electoral College and nominations for the various posts of office bearers of the Chess Federation of Pakistan by the competent forum.
