Federal Minister for Sports Mir Ejaz Hussain Jakhrani awarding prize to Wrestling Muhammar Umar

A ceremony in connection with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Sportsman of the Year Award 2009 held on 7th December, 2010 in the Office of Federal Minster for Sports, Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad.

The Minister for Sports, Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, confered Z.A Bhutto Sportsman of the Year Award 2009, on wrestler Muhammad Umar.

This medal is awarded in recognition of Muhammad Umar’s outstanding and meritorious achievements in the field of wrestling.  He is considered to be one of the best wrestlers in the country and has won numerous national and international events. Umar won a silver medal in Free Style Wrestling and a Bronze medal in Greco Roman Wrestling and is the national champion in his weight category since 1991. He hails from Gujranwala and belongs to a prominent sports family which has produced several wrestlers who represented Pakistan in different times and earned recognition for the country.

Federal Minister for Sports Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani lauded the efforts of Muhammad Umar and the Government has initiated the Z.A. Bhutto Sportsman of the year award to recognize the efforts of sportsmen who performed exceptionally well in their field of sports and won laurels for the country. He said that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was himself a great sportsman and took keen interest in the uplift of sports in the country. It was because of his personal effort that Islamabad was short-listed among the cities which were to host the 1978 Asian Games but unfortunately that dream did not materialize.
