Reception in honour of medal winners of 16th Asian Games

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani hosted a reception in honour of medal winners of 16th Asian Games at the PM secretariat on 30th November, 2010.

Pakistan clinched three gold medals (Men`s Hockey, Women Cricket and Squash Team event), two silver (individual Squash and Wushu) and three bronze medals (Snooker Team event, Kabaddi and Men`s Cricket).

The Prime Minister of Pakistan announced cash rewards for Hockey (Rs.40 million), Squash (Rs.20 million), Kabaddi (Rs.6 million), Snooker (Rs.3 million) and Women Cricket (Rs.8 million) teams.

He also announced one per cent quota for national players in the federal government housing schemes, besides additional Rs.2 million for Aamir Atlas Khan who claimed individual squash silver.

He was all praise for hockey players. He said the players won medals mainly because of having perseverance, diligence, hard work and better skills in their respective sports.

The Prime Minister, also the Patron of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, said: “There is no dearth of talent in Pakistan,” adding, “The national players will be given an opportunity to get better training from foreign qualified coaches and will be sent to international events.”

“I assure you that all the players will get jobs,” he said, as the Asian Games contingent dressed in the national colour was present at the reception.

While throwing light on the damage terrorism has caused to sports in Pakistan, he said, “Terrorism has hampered our sports but we can defeat it through sports. We are a peaceful nation.”
