Ms Yasmeen Rehman, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Women Development, inaugurated Inter-Schools/Inter-collegiate Open Competitions of Badminton and Table Tennis for Women here at Pakistan Sports Complex on 12th May, 2010. The competitions are being organized in the name of “From Battle-field to Sports-field” under the directives of the Prime Minister of Pakistan that called for reactivating sports activities at grass-roots level. Secretary Sports and Director General, PSB were also present on the colorful occasion.
Addressing the young talented players of schools and colleges, Ms Yasmeen Rehman said that the Government had taken a number of initiatives regarding gender equality and elimination of violence against women and their empowerment. She recounted the commitment of Prime Minister and President who had taken special interest in the revival of sports in the country
Ms Rehman announced that the Ministry of Women development would sponsor two female sports gala events to be organized in order to commemorate the birthdays of first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Fatima Jinnah respectively in June and August.
On the occasion, the Secretary Sports, Anisul Hasnain Musavi said such activities will not only help us integrate young identified talent with ever shrinking talent pool but also supplement the talent hunt efforts of National Sports Federations which is, in reality, scarce. He said the provinces have responded positively and started cooperating with federal sports ministry in removing the bottlenecks that hamper the revival of sports activities in schools and colleges.
On the Prize Distribution Ceremony of the Tournament held on 14th May, 2010, the Federal Minister for Sports Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani announced to organize women’s sports events on the birthdays of Fatima Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto Shaheed every year. He also said that the government wanted to encourage more than 50 percent of the country to take part in the healthy activities.
“The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is committed to the gender quality and elimination of violence against women and their empowerment. We will provide all opportunities to women to excel in sports at the national and international level,” he said.
The Federal Minister for Sports also expressed his gratitude to Advisor Prime Minister on Women Development Yasmeen Rehman for sponsoring two female sports events to be organized in order to commemorate the birthdays of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Fatima Jinnah respectively in June and August. Jakhrani said that the same competitions would be organized at provincial level adding the games of athletics and football. At the end, the Federal Minister for Sports distributed the trophies to the winners and cash prizes up to quarterfinals and certificates to all the participants.
