The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Gold Coast 2018 is an international multi-sports event for members of the commonwealth which was held on the Gold Cost, Queenland, Australia from 4th to 15th April, 2018.
The Opening Ceremony of the said Games held on 4th April, 2018 at Carrara Stadum, Gold Coast. The Gold Coast welcomed thousands of fans, athletes and officials for the XXI Commonwealth Games. This was a mementous day for the Gold Cost sets the tone for elven amazing days of world-class sports competition.
As a showcase of culture, colour, unity and diversity, the opening ceremony epitomised the spirit of the Gold Coast and Queenland. The Carrara Stadium was the centre stage of glamur, theatre and entertainment as the venue for the opening ceremony.
The ceremony drew heavily on Aboriginal culture and symbolism, with 11-year-old Isabella Graham starting the countdown with a message on a smartphone welcoming competitors, officials and fans to the “oldest living culture on Earth”.
Aboriginal musicians also played didgeridoos while children from the local Yugambeh people performed traditional dances before Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were accompanied by local elders Ted Williams and Patricia O’Connor. Williams and O’Connor welcomed all of the competitors, officials and fans on behalf of the traditional custodians of the land.
The strong beach and surf culture of the city of about 640,000 that sits some 80 kilometres south of Brisbane was also heavily referenced throughout the ceremony.
Junior surf life savers, all carrying surfboards emblazoned with the country’s name, escorted each of the 71 teams from mostly former British colonies in the Parade of Nations, led by Scotland.
Pakistan’s Weightlifter Usman Amjad Rathore led the Pakistani Contingent during the Opening Ceremony. He is followed by Chef-de-Mission Lt.Gen (Retd) Muzammil Hussain, other officials and athletes.
Predictably, a massive sustained roar began about 20 seconds before the host nation Australia, who have more than 470 athletes competing, had even entered the stadium as the last team.
The Games were officially declared open by Britain's Prince of Wales at an upbeat ceremony featuring dancing lifeguards, giant flip-flops and Australia's team marching.
The 23 sports contested in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Cycling - Mountain Bike, Cycling - Road, Cycling - Track, Diving, Gymnastics Artistic, Gymnastics Rhythmic, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Para Powerlifting, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
The Commonwealth Games 2018 drew to a close with a glittering Closing Ceremony at the Carrara Stadium. Flag-bearers from each participating country entered the stadium, followed by the athletes who entered together, without any national distinction. The president of the organizing committee and the CGF president made their closing speeches and the Games were officially closed.
Australia finished with 80 golds, way ahead of England’s 45 and India’s 26, in a tally.
